Environmental Litigation Risk and Corporate Misconduct
Environmental regulations are important constraints to corporate environmental decision-making. In this paper, we examine how environmental and social (ES) litigation risk affects related corporate misconduct. We measure ES-related litigation risk by using the political ideology of circuit judges and find that higher ex-ante ES litigation risk is associated with more corporate ES misconducts. Such effect is stronger when the institutional investor holdings are higher. We then examine investor reactions and firm responses to heightened ES litigation risk. We find that investors react negatively to liberal judge appointments, and such effect is present among firms with lower ESG profiles. These firms also reduce capital investments and conduct fewer acquisitions. Overall, we explore a novel and important determinant on corporate environmental performance.
Dr. Wu joined the Fudan University in 2019. He received his B.A. in international economics from Shanghai Jiaotong University and his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Pittsburgh. He has published research in the several leading journals include The Accounting Review, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, and Journal of Banking & Finance, among others.

文科省の支援の下、早稲田大学が主催して行う、筑波大学を含むGTIE（Greater Tokyo Innovation Ecosystem）加盟大学を対象とした選抜型研修です。国際水準の起業スキルを身に付け、海外のスタートアップ企業、若手起業家、ベンチャーキャピタル（VC）、先端技術を持つ大学等とのネットワークを構築する機会を、国内でのブートキャンプや、メルボルンの現地研修を通じて提供するプログラム構成となっています。
2024年3月3日～3月9日（研修は3/4～3/8の5日間）の期間、グローバルなビジネス展開を目指す若手起業家及びその予備軍となる学生起業家４名が、メルボルンビジネススクールでの研修に参加しました。スタートアップ企業の創業者としても経験豊富な講師陣から、実践形式の授業を受けました。彼らは非常に巻き込み力に優れており、全ての講義から新たな学びがありました。
また、現地スタートアップ企業の創業者を招き、毎回一緒にランチをしながら親睦を深め、起業に重要な話を、直接できたことも貴重でした。講義の後には市内を散策し、メルボルンの魅力を味わう事も出来ました。そして、沢山の方々のご協力によって、領事館、アクセラレーター、研究所を訪問し、有意義な議論を行わせて頂きました。
最終日には、現地VCの方々の前で発表し、有益なフィードバックを得たことも、今後役に立つ経験となりました。
"小さなWin"を意識し、それを達成し続ける事の重要性が、本研修で最も影響を得た教訓でした。私達は、社会や職場、学校といった、ありとあらゆる場面で、常に結果を求められます。成果だけが賞賛され、成果を出せなかった場合の過程は見過ごされがちです。しかし、どんなに小さなことでも、自分がやると決めてそれを達成できたのであれば、十分に価値があるという事に、改めて気付かされました。日々の“小さなWin”の蓄積が、やがて大きな成功に結び付く礎になるという事を。
メルボルンの、起業に対する支援の手厚さや、人の寛大さ、街の美しさなど、どれをとっても一生忘れられない、本当に素敵な1週間を過ごさせて頂きました。本プログラムに参加させて頂いた事、関係する皆様に感謝申し上げます。

ジェトロ初となる学生向け起業家育成・海外派遣プログラムが開催されました。全国から選抜された30名の学生が、起業の最先端の地、シリコンバレーでの交流や実践を通じてグローバルに活躍する起業家を目指して参加しました。本プログラムは、日本にグローバルなスタートアップ・エコシステムを構築し、世界で勝てるスタートアップを創出するため、スタートアップ育成5か年計画に掲載された「5年で1000人規模」の起業人材の海外派遣を達成することを目的とした経済産業省主催の「J-StarX」プログラムの一環です。
2023年9月18日～9月25日（研修は9/18～9/23の6日間）の期間、シリコンバレー在住の日本人起業家やエンジニア、GAFA出身者による講演、 デザインシンキングに関するワークショップに参加しました。高等学校・高等専門学校・大学・大学院の学生が参加しており、年齢も専門性も異なる中、お互いの関心や専門領域に関する知見を交換しながら、交流を深め、今後の起業に必要なネットワーク形成や思考の習得に努めました。
特に役に立ったのは、アメリカ合衆国 カリフォルニア州に本拠を置くデザインコンサルタント会社IDEOでの、3日間にわたるデザインシンキングの研修です。ユーザーインタビューから始め、アイデアの発散と収束をチームメンバーで行い、実際にプロトタイプ作成をし、フィードバックに基づいた改良までの一連のフローを実践しました。参加前は、アイデアの段階であった事業計画が、プログラムで学んだことを活かして、具体性を持った試作品として、形にすることができました。
現地の起業家との対話の中で、事業を行う上で、"自身の健康維持"、"学び続ける事"、"お互いがGiveし合えるネットワーク形成"の重要性を認識しました。本プログラムで得た学びと、培われた人間関係を大切にし、今後の社会貢献につなげていきたいと思います。
Our student, Akiyoshi Nagashima, gave a presentation on "Decision analysis of Japan's Green Transition Policy" at "the International Conference on Business, Economics, & Information Technology" held in Naha on March 14–15, 2024.
Professor Dr. Kevin K.W. Ho also attended this conference along with Associate Professor Dr. Shaoyu Ye (from our Institute of Library, Information, and Media Science) and presented on "The Creation, Spreading, and Slowing down of False Health Information: a Conceptual Model".
Professor Ho also presented in the Panel on Generative AI and University Education, hosted by Professor Dr. Akihiro Noguchi of Nanzan University.
